Places hold Memories

Places and Memories

I was back, back where I grew up.

Buildings have changed but the memories remain

It’s like the earth itself carries the memories

They rush in, and the changed buildings are an irritation.

As I walked with my son, I commented on the changes.

He asked, “When you look at the sky do the clouds change?”

Sure, they changed, but I wasn’t there, I didn’t live in that cloud.

I lived on earth, and some things should still be there.

Like my high school, Marshall, in SE Minneapolis.

It’s a Target store.

Where John Marshall High School once stood

Where is the sign our class worked so hard to donate to the school?

Where is the trophy case that was proudly displayed in the hall?

I didn’t mind when it was repurposed into a small business incubator.

I could still walk the halls and remember.

Now its strong brick construction is replaced with luxury high rise apartment.

It extends into the sky with a little Target store on the first floor.

I was told they’re called the Marshall apartments, but no one knows why.

Why is there such a rush to erase the past?

The sadness I feel. It’s my past disappearing. I write to relive some of that essence. Trying share some of the past that now resides only in my mind. took me back to that past, the good and the bad. The books I published: Getting Beyond… tells my good and bad, Visions from Two Continents shares the stories my mother told of times and people past. Alice Goes Down Under that I’m now writing is a fiction version of a past that is quickly disappearing. It’s life’s illusions we recall.
