My country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
of the icing. (of thee I sing)
That’s what dictating springs.
My right arm is in a sling.
I can’t type a thing.
Yet, I want to compare my two countries right now. I need to write or try to dictate about the utter sadness and fear I feel. The Australians used the American constitution as a guide when they created a country based on the rule of law. My grandfather left America during the depression of 1907. He went to Canada, and in 1912, he immigrated to Australia. He hoped to help create a country supportive of the working man.
Grandfather died in 1923. In the 1930s, Roosevelt created an America that was supportive of the working man. Kennedy and Johnson expanded that in the 1960s with the Great Society, which helped me to attend college and created programs such as WIC and food stamps. Since Reagan, the rights of workers have been eroded. Now, under the guise of government efficiency, all are being threatened without Congress’s consent. This is against our Constitution, yet the Republican congressmen are supporting it.
The working people of Australia feel under threat, too. The rich are getting richer, and the poor are unable to find housing. Wake up, Australia, or you, too, could lose your democracy.
Australians feel immune because they have compulsory voting. Every Australian citizen is registered and required to vote unless they are excused. They do not worry about cheating or require voter ID. Even felons get to vote. Unless the population is well educated and informed by honest information, they could end up like America.
That’s it: short and to the point.
PS: Wisconsinites, be sure to vote for Susan Crawford and no on the amendment on April 1. SUSAN WILL SUPPORT FAIR MAPS AND THE RIGHT OF EVERY CITIZEN TO VOTE.
`
I heartedly echo your concerns. If those who hate the limitations of a true democracy win, as they have so far in the United States, this world will become a sad, poor, backward place. Only the rich will have opportunities.
