Wilson’s Promontory National Park, Victoria, Australia

Lilly Pilly Gully Walk Nature Walk

Wilson’s Prom is three hours south of the large city (5.2 million) of Melbourne. It is the oldest national park in Australia. It is very popular. Most Melbourne high school send their students there to experience the bush. It is well preserved and reforested. We did not see any invasive species on our visit there.

A map of Wilson’s Prom:

It was ten degrees cooler than Melbourne and has constant winds. Lilly Pilly was a wonderful walk through temperate rain forest.

It is described as a Grade 2, 5.2 km return walk and takes 1.5 hours. Carefully observing the native plants it took us three hours. It was three hours of superb joy.

At the beginning a beautiful trail with all native vegetation

The yellow banksia effervescence absorbed my vision while the cicada’s singing almost drown out everything else. My American son said they sounded like car alarms

Lilly Pilly flowers
The flowers were on the Lilly Pilly tree
Ancient tree ferns were found all along the walk and especially on the boardwalk.
Small ferns were a feast for the eye

Be sure to go the extra walk on the board walk to see numerous tree ferns.

Ferns along the boardwalk
As the trail looped back towards the beginning we found a living tree with an opening for a Druid like me.
The trail ascended to some beautiful views of the bay.

It is well worth taking the time to walk the Lilly Pilly Gully Nature trail at Wilson’s Promontory National Park in Victoria, AU.
